Where Did Facebook Come From?
Facebook is hands down the largest and most used social media platform on the web. Valued in 2018 at over 100 billion dollars, where did this spectacular piece of technology come from? In 2004 at Harvard University, a young Mark Zuckerberg created 'The Facebook' in just three weeks time, all by himself. Within the first few weeks, everyone at Harvard had a facebook account. The term 'Facebook  me' became a household slang at Harvard University. But it didn't stop there. After finding huge success at Harvard, Zuckerberg expanded his empire to colleges all across the nation. Roughly a year after the release of Facebook, almost every college student in the nation had an account. A little less than a year after that, Facebook was then available to anyone across the planet aged 13 years or older. One decade later,  Facebook was valued at 104 billion dollars, but that wasn't the end. Zuckerberg had to fight two separate lawsuits at the same time. One being from his best friend and former CFO of the company, Eduardo Saverin, suing Zuckerberg for cutting his percentage of the company down to less than 1%, and Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who were two brothers at Harvard accusing Zuckerberg of stealing their idea for The Facebook. It was a similar idea to his, titled "The Harvard Connection". They asked Zuckerberg to come on board with them and help make their idea a reality, after one night when he was drunk, he hacked into the Harvard Facebook and stole the photos of every female on campus using his own algorithms. He made a website called facemash.com and which was a site comparing the faces of the women and who was more attractive. The site got 22,000 hits in one night and within a few hours, Harvard's connection crashed due to the traffic the website generated. This was said to be 'unusual for half time at the Super Bowl". Little did they know over the next couple months he was coding the entire website all by himself. He launched The Facebook and the rest was history. They later tried to go to him directly to try to talk to him about it, sent him emails, and even went to the president of Harvard, who ultimately did nothing. They eventually went and sued him after he started expanding his empire to colleges across the Atlantic Ocean.  Zuckerberg ended up losing both lawsuits, but by then, the money that was lost was chump change. Facebook now is valued at over 104 billion dollars.
